Bedroom Feng Shui: The Dos and Don’ts

The average person spends 7-8 hours each night sleeping in their bedroom. Considering all of the additional time relaxing, dressing, and getting ready, the bedroom is one of the most important rooms in the home, and deserves its due attention. Your bedroom should be a calm, restful, and peaceful environment. One of the best ways to accomplish that is by obeying the principles of feng shui. Here are our top dos and don’ts for bringing peace and joy to your bedroom through proper feng shui.

Do: Have the most luxurious bed possible

Your bed should be as soft, comforting, and inviting as possible. Make sure the bed frame, mattress, and bedding all reflect this priority. For the frame, try opting for an upholstery rather than metal or wood to add to the softness. The position of your bed is important as well. A bed that is only accessible on one side does not communicate passionate love or openness. Make sure your bed is centered and accessible by both sides to represent honesty and equality between those who sleep in it.

Your bed should also have support around it to bring balance to you and your space. Ground the bed with a nightstand on either side, a piece of furniture at the foot, or a luxurious rug underneath.

Don’t: Introduce exercise equipment, home office items, or a TV

Anything that has to do with work or exercising runs entirely counter to the energy you want in your bedroom. The sight and presence of a treadmill, desk, or even items you take to and from work can put you in a mindset that is not conducive to rest and relaxation. Your room should be void of anything tangentially related to stress, physical, or mental work. Even your TV might need to be moved! The noise and stimulation that can come through your TV won’t add to a bedroom’s relaxing features, and is especially not beneficial for sleep.

Do: Appeal to the senses

Make sure all your senses are accounted for when designing your environment. Use scented candles and wash for bedding; soft, warm lights and candles throughout the room; and promote relaxation with comfortable textured additions. Make sure the colors of the walls, materials, and decorations are harmonious. Your bedroom art should be carefully selected to appeal to the right senses. Art pieces should bring out joyful or sensual emotions, rather than anything bold or harsh and dark. Every item in your room should contribute to your bedroom’s relaxing feel, whether it communicates peace through sight, scent, feel, or sound.

Don’t: Include pieces that evoke negative emotions

It’s best to keep fake or dead plants, clutter, and even family photos out of the bedroom. Fake plants seem to take the life out of a room, and anything dead—including pressed or dried flowers—may not evoke the positive, calming emotions that should be prevalent in a bedroom. Similarly, clutter can bring negative energy into your room, as it does not offer serenity, but instead can feel suffocating and burdening. With feng shui, your room should feel fresh and open. Take out any objects that do not bring freshness or joy to your space (and, in turn, to you). Although it may seem counterintuitive to remove family photos, the bedroom just isn’t the right place for them. Pictures of your children or family can be enjoyed in other rooms, but the bedroom is about those that sleep in that room only, and its décor should reflect that. Try hanging unrelated images or art pieces that convey positive emotions instead.

Your environment has a powerful impact on your mood and mindset. Since we spend a third of our lives in our bedrooms, it’s clear that the bedroom is one of the most important rooms to design intentionally.
