The sun is shining and even in Boston, the snow piles are finally melting. Whether you’re designing a new home or remodeling an existing one, summer can inspire design choices. While you can’t necessarily bring the beach inside, you can make it feel a little more like summer in your home all year long.
Color
Add the bright yellow sunshine of summer to your home without overdoing it. Bright yellow throw pillows are a quick and easy way to freshen any room, while a yellow accent wall in the kitchen, bath, or master bedroom can make the entire space more cheery. Other colors can remind us of being at the beach; navy blue and white tiles and fabrics can be the basis of a lovely nautical theme. HGTV has a great slideshow on the best colors of summer.
Accessories
It’s easy to add splashes of summer color to any design. Consider:
- Throw pillows in bright summer colors
- Hurricane lamps
- Giant conch shells for the entry way or as a centerpiece for the table
- Artwork – from sketches of sea life to a large ship’s wheel
Textures
Sometimes, all it takes is a change in texture to make you feel the difference in the season. Translucent tiles in the kitchen or bath. Linen, canvas, rattan, and even wicker can give even the biggest luxury home that cozy beach cottage feeling.
Architecture
In working with your builder to incorporate an outdoor feel into your home design, consider adding vaulted ceilings, large windows, and even columns. Use natural wood or bamboo floors. Additionally, add a porch that wraps around the home and a central great room for a more cottage-like feel.
