Italian interior styling varies from region to region, century to century. From traditional Old World architecture and magnificently painted walls in Florence, quaint villas in Tuscany overlooking the countryside to sleek, modern apartments in Milan, one thing is for sure: Italian design exudes an air of elegance and effortless charm.

In today’s design world, Italian influences are inspiring interiors around the world. People are looking for ways to incorporate family heirlooms and antiques into a space that still feels modern and current. The modern-meets-rustic aesthetic can often be found in the most sought-after properties in Italy – it’s a style that nods to the past while looking ahead toward a cutting-edge future.
The look of “simple luxury” is also a coveted style borrowed from Italian design. Gilded chandeliers and opulent materials like marble and velvet are offset by distressed wooden accents and streamlined furniture frames for a more modest sense of easy, lived-in elegance.

With its skillfully handcrafted pieces and centuries-old architecture, Italian design has always had a unique artistic sentiment. We see this mimicked today through the growing appreciation for bespoke and handcrafted furniture, custom cabinetry and woodwork, and ornate metal fixtures and furnishings.

Italy is home to many of the world’s most renowned fashion designers. Haute couture designs from the runway are often reinterpreted into the home, like the streamlined looks of Milanese menswear and chic, cool styles of ladies’ fashion.

It’s no secret that Italian culture sparks diverse creativity – from architecture to art to fashion to food. It’s my guess that we will continue to look to Italian design for inspiration for many years to come. And since it’s one of my favorite places to travel, I am always available to take a trip to do some research!
